Born 1964, Sarath Gunasiri Perera is a practicing artist in the field of contemporary art. Perera completed his Masters of Fine Art in Painting at the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and today is one of the island's established abstract contemporary painters. He was formerly the Head of Department at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, Sri Lanka, his alma mater. While for many years focusing more on his responsibilities in the education of contemporary art, the artist has now published a book and held several solo and group exhibitions in recent years.In his recent works, Perera's abstract expressionist style shows signs of evolution in both colour and fragmentation. The identifiable forms visible in his early work have in his recent work become further abstracted. This renowned artist is the former Chairman of the Art and Sculpture Panel, Arts Council of Sri Lanka, Department of Cultural Affairs and presently serves as the Chairman of the advisory committee Visual Arts Panel, Department of Cultural Affairs.
