“The Year of the Tiger” celebrates traditional Chinese culture. Here in Singapore, Chinese make up the largest ethnic group. The shophouse is painted in a classic red contrasting with a shimmering gold metallic. Large glowing lanterns bring in the festivities as well as a romantic mood. The paper-cut tiger makes us think of Chinese New Year celebrations. Longevity symbols form a wallpaper-like background, ushering in good luck. A Peranakan tile pattern in the left corner remind us that this is a Shophouse found here in Singapore.
The photograph used in this artwork of a well-preserved Peranakan Shophouse was taken at Koon Seng Road, Joo Chiat, Singapore.
