“Chinoiserie en Bleu”, tells a classic story of traditional blue & white Chinese porcelain. A ginger jar proudly stands in the bottom right.
The sky has an all-over chinoiserie pattern, reminding one of old French wallpaper. The term Chinoiserie originated in France in the 1800s. This was a period when explorers brought back their exotic finds from China. Soon there was a boom in local factories where artisans recreated patterns inspired by what had been discovered in Asia. Their interpretation was a romanticized version of Chinese pagodas and natural scenes shown in pastel shades of blue, jade & pink.
