All over Little India, Shophouses are found. This artwork is a reflection of that story. ‘Masala’ refers to an Indian spice; similarly, motifs of chillies and anise are sprinkled over the canvas. The rich reds and yellows remind one of these warm dishes. A traditional Indian pattern is printed in the sky, and actual sari cloth has been stitched into the Shophouse itself. I can imagine the warmth of this artwork suitably paired with a rich red carpet.
The Shophouse artwork is reflective of Singapore culture and heritage. Shophouse buildings can be found all over the island. These stately buildings are a wonderful expression of the blending of a work and living space.
This canvas print is a digital reproduction of the original artwork "Masala Skies" by Deborah McKellar.
