In the past, when Singapore used to be a Malay fishing settlement, many “Kampongs” could be found. The term “Kampong” refers to traditional villages, especially those of indigenous people. A Kampong lifestyle was simple and laid-back. There was a sense of community and neighbours looked out for each other - the “Kampong Spirit”. In the present day, almost all of the Kampong have been demolished and redeveloped, save for one last surviving Kampong in the North-East - Kampong Lorong Buangkok.

This canvas print is a digital reproduction of the original artwork "Tales of the Kampong Chickens" by Deborah McKellar.

Deborah McKellar, born in 1981 in Johannesburg, South Africa completed her postgraduate studies in 2006 with a Master of Design, Majoring in Textiles at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Australia. Prior to this she obtained a BA (HONS) Fine Arts majoring in painting in 2005 at LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore.
