The Amazing World of Photography
Photography can be a unique way for an artist to share their artistic visions. It allows for the capture of reality which is subjectively shaped according to their visions. In this article, we'll be exploring the unique styles of photography of the photographers of Fiidaa Art! Each of them sport hidden wonders in their work.
Along the way, we'll also be noting 6 tips and techniques that can elevate your own photography skills.
Capturing the Greatness of Nature
The sheer beauty nature without a doubt always makes for a desirable, timeless subject. Our photographers shoot landscape shots that never fail to wow. Furthermore, the more inaccessible and rare a scene, the more the WOW factor it evokes! Loredana De Sole captures a fading dusk (or dawn, if she's an early riser) light emanating from the side which creates a gentle highlight on the rocks, clouds and mountain, which otherwise remain shadowy and muted. Tip #1: Play with the lighting of the day to manipulate angles of highlights and shadows.
Shimon and Tammar Rothstein capture a phenomenal shot of a foggy rock formation, reflected upon a still water's surface. Tip #2: Experiment with water reflections to create a double image.
Tommy Kwak gifts us with his picturesque and aesthetic photographic style. On top of the intrinsic beauty of the waves, sky and flowers, one thing you'd notice is the central focus and the utilization of space cut across at a 180° angle to make a striking portrayal. Tip #4: Centralize the subject you wish to portray and align lines straight for a clean look.
Documenting Living Things
Some photography artists turn their cameras to document scenes of living things in interaction with our world. These moments are especially meaningful because of the unique experiences and consciousness of living beings.
Le Vu Cuong's photos depict naturalistic moments: Viet workers donning conical hats in a field, to ducks swimmingly joyfully in Copenhagen.
Post-processing is also an important part of the process. Tonal values, colours and effects are edited on software by photographers to bring out the look they want. Tip #5: Don't be afraid to edit photos to make a bolder statement.
The Classic B&W
On the topic of post-processing, a popular choice amongst photographers is to go for classic black & white - it presents a sleek and irreplaceable feel. Though a symbol of vintage photography, it also affords a modern look.
Abstract Photography
For traditional photographers, the moment captured of the subject is the main focus; reality is immortalised with all the emotions it conveys through the shot.
Completely novel styles of photography instead make use of photography as a tool to create montages, edits and scenes that in the end hardly resemble reality anymore. They introduce an element of abstraction: defined as art that is based on a subject, where forms have been simplified or schematised. For example, Stanko Ropic creates ink prints that collage and overlay of photos of flowers. These fantastical and iridescent hues make this a spectacular, one-of-a-kind work! Tip #6: Use editing software to combine and overlay images to transform your photos.
Terence Tan and Sven Pfrommer and make abstract photographic works of urban cityscapes, using overlaying, duplication and colour replacement techniques. The result is a unique and invigorating take on the urban.
In his Urban Blur series, Sven makes use of blurring techniques, light, and colour manipulation to create colourful human figures in the distance. The sheer abstraction is thought-provoking and powerful.
These photographic works also fit right in with the office; depending on the mood you are going for, an urban piece can elevate the corporate ambiance.
There are still so many uncovered styles of photography we cannot afford to share with you in this short article: macro photography, light photography, portrait photography, studio photography, you name it! Even though only natural light is needed, LED and neon lights can bestow an added dimension. Technical camera settings like shutter speed, ISO, and aperture — otherwise known as the exposure triangle, play a critical role in understanding of the inner works of professional photography.
